When I get time to visit the board I usually try and go through as many and as much of the new and sometimes older posts in forums that interest me, which is most of them to be honest, that's why I'm so far behind with new posts haha
Listings under Unread Posts are an easy way for me to stay up-to-date. A very handy feature.
I voted for the second option, whatever forum I've been on, I've always done it that way.

Poor design of poll, I fear.
MaxRoper has it right as far as I'm concerned.

They all say boxer shorts are cool,
but little Speedos always rule.

With the exception of a few members, where I specifically look at their posts, I also just use the unread posts view.

"Unread Posts" has a very short track history.
I use the Active Topics, since you can actually see every topic that's been posted on, up to several days back.
On another note, I'm really surprised to see that the majority of members who've voted aren't using the browsing tools that in inbuilt with these phpbb-type forums. It's no wonder then, that so many members were out of the loop when chadmc90 took the decision to close one of the chartrooms after almost two weeks of polling and public discussion.

Given the surprising results (not really) of this particular poll, I encourage all users to try navigating the board by using the Quick links tools, more specifically: New Posts, Unread Posts and Active Topics.
Using the Quick links is the only way to stay up to date with forum news, new stories and active discussions.

Voted second option. I just click on the forums that interest me.
