Random Thoughts on Writing

Post by drawscore »

I have noticed that several stories have "disappeared" after getting one or more "unfavorable" reviews or comments. No doubt, because the author is unhappy with the criticism.

First, when you post a story, you invite commentary, positive or negative. It goes with the territory.

Second, when your work does get criticized, it is usually 'constructive' criticism," intended to help you improve, or avoid pitfalls/errors in future stories.

Third, the members of this board are notorious for not commenting at all. A better gauge, is the number of reads. 226 reads means just that: Your work has been opened 226 times, and interest has been shown, despite the fact you only got five comments, two were critical, and one was your own, in response to the criticism.

Fourth, don't let criticism discourage you. There is a Latin phrase for that: "Illigitimi non tatum carborundum." It means "Don't let the bastards wear you down."

Fifth, writing is a learned or "acquired" skill. The more you do, the better you get. (Supposedly)

Sixth, Commentators make mistakes. too.
