Damsel in Distress Short Story Collection /FF

Post by Stiletto Amore »

The First in a collection of short stories of 300 words exactly

Adventures in Damsel Land

"So" Velma said, as we walked, arm in arm through the woods together "Which of us do you think is going to get into trouble and need rescuing today?"

I lowered my chin and turned cautiously to meet her look

"Are you suggesting" I asked with a grin "We should be setting ourselves up for some tie up games in the near future?"

Vee nodded with mock solemnity.

"I'm afraid that remains a distinct possibility"

"Ah well, what will be will be"

We were about to resume our journey when we found the path ahead blocked.

Half a dozen warrior women, dressed in animal furs were standing in our way each of them carrying impressive looking farm tools, all of which featured sharp, pointy bits that made us both feel distinctly nervous.

With their dread-locked hair and bright war paint it was hard not to notice how grim and imposing these young women looked.

"So, is this the kind of thing you were expecting?" I whispered conspiratorially.

"Captured by Amazonian tribe women - are you sure it’s not my Birthday?"

“Behave” I chided her.

“Take us to your Leader!” spreading her arms in a warm and friendly manner.

"What are you doing?" I asked, mouth agape

"Come along Sam, what's the worst that could happen?"

"You're really asking that?" I sighed.

"Well, look on the bright side, they might take us somewhere warm before they stab us with the gardening equipment"

“Seize them!” Said the woman with the improbably large axe “Bind their hands. The War council can decide what to do with them”

“Why don’t we just agree to come with you. Without any need for binding of any kind”

“Nonsense Sam - If it’s their custom, who are we to argue? Go ahead girls - tie us up!” Vee invited gaily.

The Leopard Lounge

We rounded the corner and almost collided with a man in a pinstripe suit clutching a Smith and Western.

Standing less than 4ft tall in his socks he was among the least intimidating gangsters I had ever set eyes upon.

Fortunately he had two, rather impressive sized goons with him to compensate.

“No one need's to get hurt, we’re just going to take a little ride” He explained, with barely concealed glee.

“Okay ladies, hands behind your back”

Lucky me I got to go first.

“They obviously don’t realise they’re tying up an escape artist?” Velma bragged as she watched my hands being bound with thick rope.

“Quiet Vee” I whispered as a blindfold was slipped over my eyes and tied roughly at the back.

A gag (which felt like half a roll of duct tape) swiftly followed.

“What are you so worried about, it’s only a simple half inch knot”

“PHhnph'ph hnrnmm phhm pnnnph!” I mumbled as they commenced fastening my ankles.

“Wait! Did you say your friend here was a magician!?” The pint sized Pacino barked.

“An escape artist” Velma corrected him “The best in town”

“So, does that mean she can escape from all manner of ropes and chains and stuff?”

“That’s right” Vee said proudly.

“What a lucky break”

“How so?”

“Well, I’ve been looking for new acts to book in my club”

“That is a coincidence” Velma agreed.

“So, do you think she can get free now”

“Ha! These ropes?” She snorted indignantly “Child’s play!”

“Oh really?! Ok, what say we make a little wager. If this magic Dame is as good as you say she is I’ll let you both go free. But - you have to promise to come perform that act next week at the Leopard Lounge”

“Mister - you got yourself a deal”

The Helpful Hostage

“Come now, don’t act so coy - we both know why you’re here”

“I’m not sure I follow” replied the masked man in the black and white striped outfit.

“Pish and posh. It’s no use playing the fool - you’re here to kidnap me aren’t you?”

“What on Earth makes you think that?”

I met his gaze with a glassy, but knowing eye.

“You mean besides the service revolver and coil of rope you have concealed behind your back?”

“Ah, well, yes,.. You see,..” He spluttered

I yawned.

“Look, it’s not that I object to the whole thing on principle - indeed I’ve been ransomed a great many times all told. It’s just I’m getting a little sick and tired of being kidnapped for someone else's benefit”

“I’m sorry” he replied, apparently flabbergasted

“No need to apologise. It’s nothing personal - I just think that since I’m the one being inconvenienced, I should get to enjoy my share of the spoils”

“Er, so,.. That is to say, what were you thinking?”

“Oh, nothing too unreasonable - say we split the profit fifty-fifty. What do you say?”

“Well, this is a commercial age” He replied, stopping some way short of dismissing it as an idea

“Boots like these don’t come cheap” I explained, showing off my footwear

“Most impressive” he said admiringly

“Thanks. Say, are you working on your own, or are you in with the Ice Queen?”

“I don’t think I’m familiar”

“Ah, you must be one of Mistress Bunnies gang”

He looked at me quizzically.

“Striking redhead with tall, fluffy ears and a button tail?” I prompted

“Nothing doing I’m afraid”

“Oh, well that’s a shame. I was rather looking forward to catching up with her - she always lays on the best catering. Still, beggars can’t be choosers. So, do we have a deal?”

Long Storys with an elaborate Story Line have their merits, but I do like also collections of short vignettes like this one :)

As good as longer ones can be, I also love the shorter stories! It’s great when you don’t have a lot of time to sit down and commit to the longer ones. And you’re really good at writing them.

Great stories, and as you stated, not every story needs to be 100 pages long.
Thanks for reading. Feel free to comment.
