Tied Twins: The Bound Buccaneers

Slowly, cautiously, Denise and Elise Davis raised their hands and surrendered.

They had little choice. Two of the neighborhood boys, Nate Trickett and Beau Morrison, had ambushed them. Now, menacingly brandishing their wooden cutlasses, the two erstwhile pirates took the twin girls captive.

“Aarrghh,” growled Nate in his best movie-stereotype pirate voice. “These wrenches will pay for finding our treasure. We’ll make ’em walk the plank!”

“That’s ‘wenches,’ not ‘wrenches,’ dummy!” Elise said. “And where are you going to make us walk the plank? We’re in a backyard, not a boat.”

“Hush, girlie! Prisoners aren’t allowed to talk back,” Beau said, holding the point of his sword under Elise’s chin. “If ye don’t pipe down, we’ll show ye what cutthroats we be.”

“So, what shall we do with these two, matey?” Nate asked.

“I know! We’ll lash ’em to the mast while we re-bury the chest,” Beau replied. “C’mon, ‘wenches,’ we’re takin’ you to our hideout!”

The girls glanced at each other and smiled. Of all the childhood games they played, they most enjoyed the ones in which they got tied up. They’d been playing them with each other for more than two years. In that short time, they had acquired more knot-tying and lashing expertise than an average Sea Scout troop.

“What are you going to do with us after you bury the chest, Captain?” Denise asked, glancing over her shoulder at Nate, marching just behind with the point of his cutlass poking the small of her back.

“Avast, we’ll sell ye both off to the highest bidder!” he replied. “Red-haired girlies bring top dollar down here the Caribbean!”

Their arrival at the pirates’ lair, the garden shed in Nate’s back yard, cut short the conversation. Nate unlatched the door and stood to one side as Beau ushered the captives in.

“Sit there on those buckets,” Nate said to the twins, gesturing toward a couple of overturned five-gallon plastic pails. Hands still in the air, the girls complied.

While Cap'n Nate menaced the prisoners with his sword, First Mate Beau rummaged through the cluttered workbench for some rope. “Look in that Amazon box next to the wall,” Nate suggested.

“Got it,” Beau replied, pulling out several coils of cotton clothesline and flopping them onto the wooden bench.

“You tie that one up,” Nate said, gesturing toward Elise, “and I’ll tie up this one. Hold out your hands.”

Smiling, the girls placed their palms together and extended their arms. The boys wound the lengths of rope around their captives’ wrists several times and knotted them in place. Denise and Elise looked at one another, doing their best to maintain straight faces.

“Now let’s tie their feet,” Beau said, grabbing two more lengths of rope. As they had done with the girls’ hands, they wrapped the ropes sloppily around the twins’ ankles and knotted the ropes triumphantly in place.

“That ought to hold ’em, matey,” growled Nate. “Aaarrgh, time to bury that treasure.” He grabbed two shovels from the tool rack and handed one to Beau. “Let’s go.”

As the door closed, Denise and Elise went to work. The boys hadn’t wrapped the ropes tightly at all, and the girls had no trouble slipping their wrist bonds. It took them only seconds to reach down and free their ankles.

“Nice work, fellow ‘wrench,’” Denise giggled. “Let’s go torment Captain No-Beard and his minion.”

The boys hadn’t even reached the far side of the yard when Elise pushed the door open. “They’re almost to the trees,” she said. “I’ll bet they’re headed for the ditch at the foot of the hill. Let’s beat ’em there!”

The girls took off on a dead run, circling the small stand of trees and arriving at the ditch well before the boys arrived. They hid behind a bush just before the pirates hove into view. Beau carried the shovels, while Nate carried the small box of ill-gotten booty.

The boys tried to dig a hole with their wooden swords still tucked in their belts, but that proved unwieldy. They drew the swords and leaned them against the branches of the very bush Denise and Elise were hidden behind.

“This is pretty hard work,” Beau said after a few minutes. “Maybe we should have brought a smaller box.”

“We’ll take that box!” Elise snapped, startling the treasure burial crew. “Hands up, you scurvy dogs!”

The boys looked up. Denise and Elise stood there triumphantly, brandishing the counterfeit cutlasses. “You heard the lady,” Denise said, grinning. “Hands up.”

“How did you get loose?” Nate asked, his voice rising in a most un-pirate-like manner.

“We’re clever little wenches,” Elise said. “And, frankly, your tying stinks.”

“It does not!”

“If it doesn’t stink, why are we here?” Denise asked with a smirk.

“You must have cheated! You found a knife and cut yourselves free, didn’t you?”

The girls shook their heads, reveling in the boys’ discomfiture. “Nope. We untied ourselves fair and square,” Elise said.

“Prove it!” Nate countered.

“OK, let’s walk back up to the shed. You’ll find the ropes right where we left them. The ankle ropes won’t have knots in them; the wrist ropes will. We were able to slip our hands free without even untying the knots.”

Sure enough, when the boys entered the shed, they saw the ropes arrayed exactly as Elise predicted they would be.

“How did you do that?” Beau asked.

“We’re not telling,” Denise said. “We’re sneaky little ‘wrenches.’”

Nate glowered at them. “So, what are you going to do with us now?” he demanded.

Elise winked at Denise. “We should tie you up and leave you here, same as you did to us,” Elise said. “But we’re going to give you another chance. We’re going to let you tie us up again, this time with our hands behind our backs. And make it a little tighter, OK? Last time wasn’t much of a challenge.”

Smiling benevolently, the girls handed the swords to the pirate crew and sat down atop the buckets. They sat calmly as the boys tied their wrists and ankles no more neatly, but considerably more tightly than before. Satisfied with their handiwork, the pirate crew once again took their leave.

“How tight are your ropes?” Denise asked her sister.

“Pretty tight, but nothing I can’t handle,” Elise replied, twisting her hands and searching with her fingers for the knot. The ill-placed granny knot surrendered easily to her practiced fingers, and she quickly wriggled her wrists free. She looked over at Denise and saw her already bent over, untying her ankles.

“I don’t think we’ll be able to beat them back to the ditch,” Denise said. “And I don’t think they’ll leave their swords where we can get to them. How are we going to get the treasure back?”

Elise looked over at the tool rack. “Let’s take those two pitchforks,” she said, pointing to a pair of short-handled garden forks. “We’ll get the drop on them when they come back up through the trees.”

Ten minutes later, just as the boys reached the edge of the grassy field, Denise and Elise slipped from their hiding places and stole in behind the two pirates.

“Hands up,” Denise said, poking the pitchfork gently into Nate’s back.

“No way!” he shouted, raising his hands. “How in the heck?!”

“I told you, we’re sneaky,” she said. “And you’re our prisoners now. Back to the shed.”

“What are you going to do with us?” Beau demanded.

“What you did to us,” Elise said. “We’re going to tie you up. And if you’re lucky, we’ll come back and let you loose -- after we’ve dug up the treasure and buried it somewhere else, of course.”

Fifteen minutes later, the girls looked back at the boys, hogtied securely on the shed’s dusty floor.

“The blindfolds were a nice touch, E,” Denise said. “You know, they’re going to be like that until we come back.”

“For sure,” Elise agreed, slapping her twin a high-five. “Hey, not bad work for a couple of ‘wrenches!’”
