We've got lots of local leather and bdsm shops around where I am. I've never ordered online but I've never had a bad experience with places around here. Support your local and small businesses!

I've bought all of my rope from LoveHoney.
My main reasons for that are:
  • Purpose built for bondage
  • Site has a good review system
  • You can normally get 5m rope in a 3 for £15 deal

I'll be sure to check them out sometime, I brought a lot of my original ropes from Ann summers but they've degraded ever since that so I really need some more.

No, not really, if you get the right kind. Braided cotton clothesline is a very common TUG "tool." I would avoid plastic clothesline, though. See bondageboi's avitar. That's 1/4 inch braided cotton clothesline.

The type and size of rope you want certainly varies.

First stuff I got was some cotton rope from Lovehoney. They're a well-established brand, so buying from them felt easier. The stuff is very soft; this does feel more comfy, but it's also quite weak, and can stretch a bit. Not the easiest to untie and seems incredibly prone to tangling.

I'm trying to get into some fancier ropework now, so I've looked into other types. Hemp and jute are both good choices; good friction, not too stretchy. They do feel rougher. Hemp is stronger, while jute is lighter. There is also more involved in treating and caring for the ropes, but that's almost a different topic. I recently got some Jute from Anatomie's online store, pretty happy with it.

Granted how important this stuff is does depend on what you're doing with it.

The absolute best I have found is rawganique. Their 8mm hemp is my favorite. Its just rope though, you need to break it in, (dye it to your favorite color), and oil it. I like doing those processes though so its hardly a chore for me.
