Nosing Around
Curiosity got the best of me. The cellar was always off-limits, but I was never told why. What could be in there. My imagination ran wild. I knew I shouldn’t, but just a quick peek couldn’t hurt anyone. I wouldn’t touch anything, so no one would know I was even in there. The sunlight behind me shot a beam into the dark room as soon as I opened the door, providing me a path to follow. At the end of that path, at the threshold of where the sunlight ended, there was a boy. He looked about my age. His eyes were bright blue, and they grew wide seeing me. I paused, confused. What was he doing here, in this cellar? The boy sat on his knees with his hands behind his back. He was tied up with brown ropes, and black tape covered his mouth, making whatever he was trying to say sound muffled and incoherent. He shifted around on his knees, twisting his shoulders, and bringing his tied hands around his waist as much as the ropes would let him.
I knelt down close, examining him. I promised myself I wouldn’t touch anything. I promised not to go down here, but what else could I do? He looked so desperate, and all I wanted to do was help him. It must’ve been scary, being in the dark for who knows how long. But what if he was dangerous? If I let him go, would he attack me? There must’ve been a good reason for this, right? If I took off the tape, he could explain this. Gently, I began to scrape at the tape sealing his mouth shut. I wanted to be careful peeling it off so it wouldn’t hurt. Before I could, a sharp voice cut through me, making me freeze.
“--What are you doing down here!?” A lound, angry voice boomed throughout the cellar. I turned around. “S-sorry, Pa!” I exclaimed. He was a large man, and the sunlight coming from behind him cast him in full blackness. I rose to my feet, at full attention. I didn’t have to see the look on his face to know how much trouble I was in. He barked at me, ushering me to my room. I looked back for a moment at the person tied up behind me, and my hesitation made Pa bark again. I was already in enough trouble, no need to make things harder on myself. I rushed up the stairs out of the cellar. I heard the door slam behind me, and the Pa’s presence following close by. I thought about the boy, but more than that, I thought about what my punishment for breaking the rules was going to be.
