As pre-teens and young teenagers, I would guess that our favorite items of clothing, were jeans, and the older, and more faded they were, the better.
New jeans? No, no, no, no, no! If we got new jeans, we'd outgrow them long before they became faded and soft, the way we liked them. Most of the jeans/pants we wore, came from the Goodwill, Salvation Army, or other thrift shops, or from the troop clothing exchange. Many of our shirts did, too.
Those that we did outgrow, often went back into the clothing exchange, or were handed down to younger brothers or cousins.
We did have new clothes that we wore to school, but every now and then, they'd all be in the wash, and we'd have to wear our "grubbies" to school. They were clean, and smelled fresh (due to a love of a heavy dose of fabric softener on the part of our mothers), and sometimes drew comments from our friends, mostly positive.
